Online dating profiles are a lousy measure of someone’s personality. There is no sure way to tell if someone is telling the truth. Dating profiles only contain what they want you to think about them and their personality, not who they actually are. This is not to discourage you from using online dating services. They can be a really valuable way to meet people, and make connections in your life. Still, let this serve as fair warning – do not dive too deeply into something with someone you have never met. You might not like the results.

For such a hip young city, it sure is hard to meet other local singles in Toronto. I have been here for a year, and have gotten only a few dates. It is not that people are not friendly. Canadians are the friendliest people in the whole wide world, and Toronto is no exception. It is just, I think, a big city thing. People you meet have no problem chatting you up for a few minutes, but everyone has such busy lives, and knows so many casual friends, that they are all perfectly at ease with the idea of never meeting you again in your whole life. It has gotten to the point where I am desperate, so a few months ago, I signed up for my first Toronto dating service. Since then, I have become a junkie.

In our age of internet dating services, the rules of dating and especially online dating rules have changed drastically for American singles. Whether you are a man or a woman, there is no doubt that the online dating rules are far more complicated than they were a generation or so ago, and that is a fact. There is no simple way around it.
